From the recording Becoming
Someone I once knew liked to use the expression "dig yourself and be dug in return". It struck my fancy - I couldn’t resist using it as a song title. At first I didn't even really get what it meant, but as the lyrics came together, the song found its own meaning. This track features my friend and former bandmate Billy Meech on some seriously smokin' lead guitar.
Lyrics
Dig Yourself
pretty boy, bein' coy, got a toy, play decoy, work a ploy
your homies all panned it
smack a face just in case rhythm ace out of space
some disgrace you made
counterfeit, penny-bit, little shit, can't commit, hit-n-quit
ain’t the way you planned it
they hung your ass to dry
and you’ve not a clue why
you might wanna…...
dig yourself
and be dug in return
dig your Self, there's a lot of you to learn
know yourself or stay unknown
know your Self, show yourself, or you’re going it alone
party on, same old song, thrill a throng, burn your bong,
ain’t nothing wrong with pretending
talkin proud playin’ loud wow the crowd stoned and plowed
baby how'd you survive?
all the time takin cash, talkin trash, burn and crash
with panache, straight to the ending
you must be out of your mind,
(mister nickel-and-dime)
flyin' stone blind
you might wanna…
dig yourself and be dug in return
dig your Self, there's a lot of you to learn
know yourself or stay unknown
know your Self, show yourself, or you’re going it alone
the love you make is the love you take
so send it on out, it will come on back
it’s comin’ on back to you
(no angel, you’re no angel, no you ain’t)
you must be out of your mind,
wastin’ all of our time
wanna be thinkin ‘bout…
dig yourself and be dug in return
dig your Self, there's a lot in there to learn
know yourself or be an unknown
know your Self, show yourself, or you’re going it alone
love your Self, free yourself
be yourself
you sure can't be anybody else
dig yourself,
love yourself…
dig yourself, be yourself,
free yourself, love yourself, go on…
dream yourself
