From the recording Becoming

The music showed up 50 years ago and has lived only in my head until now. The lyrics came in August 2021 while travelling. During the trip I got the idea to use ‘Becoming’ as an album title - and what the word becoming might mean in the first place. It’s a beautiful concept – the underlying idea is that we are in a state of constant, dynamic change as opposed to simple, static being. We are always evolving.
Perhaps the author Kurt Vonnegut said it best when he said this:“Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.”

Lyrics

When I was a child I thought as a child
Naked and innocent, unclaimed and wild
Through tender eyes
And temper cries did my world appear
But how time flies
Today arrives
My new world is here

This is the day I Become

Mostly we see only darkly through glass
Epiphany moments, too soon they pass
There, flying blind, fumbling forward
Best as I could
Drawing to something true
At long last understood

This is the day I Become

Gazing across lost-desert land
Searching for clues like jewels in the sand
How will I know, when will I know?
Reality seems now a great mirage
Truth conceals under camouflage
Of yes or no, of faith or doubt
Of ebb and flow, how will it show
If ever I find out?

So many valleys in darkness I’ve crossed
All said and done, have I won or have I lost?
But not all for naught have I sought
To see the real me, just as I am
Sweet Liberty, this is my victory

This is the day
This is the day I Become
This is the day
This is the day I Become
